The Florida Bar Board of Governors Announcement

Several weeks ago, after learning that current Florida Bar Board of Governors Member, Fred Franklin, did not intend to run for reelection, I made the decision to run for this seat. This week, The Florida Bar permitted individuals to announce their candidacy for this position.

For the last 18 of my 20 years of practice in the legal profession I have served in leadership roles for either the Jacksonville Bar Association or The Florida Bar. My service began on the Board of Governors for the Young Lawyers Section of The Jacksonville Bar Association, holding all offices, including President. I served for over 10 years on the Board of Governors of The Jacksonville Bar Association, and served as its President in 2013-2014. I am currently serving on the Executive Board of the Trial Lawyers’ Section of The Florida Bar and The Florida Bar’s Unlicensed Practice of Law Committee for the Fourth Judicial Circuit.

I cannot recall my original motivation to run for the Young Lawyers Section Board in 1999, but I do recall why I ran for reelection. I loved it and I gained much serving in these various leadership roles. The work has been genuinely meaningful, from service to the underprivileged, to civics education programs for children regarding the importance of the rule of law, and training lawyers to better meet the needs of their clients. It included promoting our profession and defending the judicial branch of government through presentations at local civic organizations and lobbying elected officials. Our court system has been under attack for a number of years; our courts have faced funding problems; and we have seen legislative proposals to change the structure of our highest Court. Access to courts and justice has never been more expensive and the resources available to our underprivileged have never been more limited. Looking back, I realize I have also made many lifelong friends through my service to the local and state organizations.

I am committed to making a difference. I am committed to working with the Florida Legislature through my strong relationships with our elected officials and to continue defending our court system. The election will be held in March, 2018. I welcome the opportunity to speak with you or your firms about my candidacy and answer any questions you may have. I greatly appreciate your support.
